According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles comprise a mere three percent of registered vehicles on American roads, yet account for at least 15 percent of all fatal road accidents. No matter how you look at it, these are troubling numbers.
Motorcycles can be great fun to ride, but woe to any biker who has the bad luck to collide with a car. The best way to protect yourself is to remain alert, follow the rules of the road, wear a helmet and always keep yourself and your bike covered with  .
The US Department of Transportation expands on the above safety rules, adding a reminder for motorcyclists to share the road, be conspicuous and only ride when sober.
Should you follow all those rules and still wind up in a traffic accident, you'll be glad you have a motorcycle insurance policy. If you are found to have caused the accident, you may be held financially responsible for damages and injuries.
Nearly every state requires motorcyclists to carry proof of insurance every time they ride. Although not required by law in every state, it's important to cover your assets with insurance. A good motorcycle insurance policy can pay for dings and damages. Comprehensive insurance may protect your two-wheeled investment against loss due to theft and vandalism. Collision insurance may pay for repair or replacement if you're ever involved in an accident. Medical liability insurance is important too, in case you, your passenger or another driver are ever injured in an accident.
